Taking the GRE is an important step toward your future, whether you are planning to go to graduate school, business, law school or just exploring your options

GRE TEST OVERVIEW

Who Administers The GRE?

The full meaning of GRE is “Graduate Record Examination”. Taking the GRE is an important step toward your future, whether you are planning to go to graduate school, business, law school or just exploring your options. It is a smart move to show schools your best.

Who Administers The GRE?

The US-based “Educational Testing Service” (ETS), develops and administers the GRE test. ETS is responsible for setting questions, conducting the test and sending score reports.

GRE Test Modules

The available GRE test modules at the moment are;

1GRE General Test

2. GRE Subject Test

Prospective graduate and business school applicants from all around the world who are interested in pursuing a master’s, MBA, specialized master’s in business, J.D. degree, or doctoral degree take the GRE General Test. Applicants come from varying educational and cultural backgrounds and the GRE General Test provides schools with a common measure for comparing candidates’ qualifications.

The scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement your undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study.

GRE Subject Test

Prospective graduate school applicants take the Subject Tests. Applicants come from varying educational and cultural backgrounds and the GRE Subject Tests provide a common measure for comparing candidates’ qualifications.

GRE Subject Test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement your undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study. Some Subject Tests yield sub scores that can indicate the strengths and weaknesses in an individual student’s preparation and may also be useful for guidance and placement purposes.

The GRE Subject Tests are achievement based tests that measure your knowledge and skill level in a particular field of study. They’re intended for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in one of the following disciplines:

Mathematics
Physics
Psychology

THE GRE GENERAL TEST STRUCTURE

The GRE test consists of three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing. The overall test time is about 1 hour and 58 minutes. There are five sections. In the real test, the Analytical Writing section will always come first, followed by either the Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning sections (which may appear in any order).

It closely reflects the kind of thinking you’ll do in today’s demanding graduate school programs, including business and law. It measures your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills — skills that have been developed over a long period of time and aren’t related to a specific field of study but are important for all.

Quantitative Reasoning: Two sections (47 minutes)

Section 1: 12 questions, 21 minutes

Section 2: 15 questions, 26 minutes

The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to:

understand, interpret and analyze quantitative information
solve problems using mathematical models
apply basic skills and elementary concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis

Verbal Reasoning: Two sections (41 minutes)

Section 1: 12 questions, 18 minutes

Section 2: 15 questions, 23 minutes

The Verbal Reasoning section measures your ability to:

analyze and draw conclusions from discourse; reason from incomplete data; identify author’s assumptions and/or perspective; understand multiple levels of meaning, such as literal, figurative and author’s intent
select important points; distinguish major from minor or irrelevant points; summarize text; understand the structure of a text
understand the meaning of individual words, sentences and entire texts; understand relationships among words and among concepts

Analytical Writing: One section (30 minutes)

Section: Issue task, 30 minutes

The Analytical Writing section measures your ability to:

articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
control the elements of standard written English

It requires you to provide focused responses based on the tasks presented, so you can accurately demonstrate your skill in directly responding to a task.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE NEW GRE GENERAL AND OLD GRE GENERAL TEST STRUCTURE

(GRE after Sept 22, 2023 Vs GRE before Sept 22, 2023)

The major difference centers on the number of question and timing.

GRE GENERAL TEST SCORING

The GRE test score reflects your performance across three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Each section’s score is reported on a different scale. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning range from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments, while Analytical Writing goes from 0 to 6 in half-point (i.e. 0.5) increments.

See below the GRE test score table:

SectionMinimum ScoreMaximum Score
Verbal Reasoning130170
Quantitative Reasoning130170
Total Score260340
Analytical Writing06

From the above table your GRE score is a sum of your scores in both verbal and quantitative reasoning sections (on the range of 260 – 340) whereas the analytical writing is scored separately (on the range of 0 – 6).

THE GRE SUBJECT TEST STRUCTURE

The GRE Subject Tests are administered in a computer-delivered format. Total testing time is 2 hours and 50 minutes for the Mathematics Test and 2 hours for the Physics and Psychology Tests. There are no separately timed sections.

View the content of each Subject Test.

Mathematics

Mathematics: 66 questions (2 hours, 50 minutes)

Overview

The test consists of approximately 66 multiple-choice questions drawn from courses commonly offered at the undergraduate level.

Approximately 50% of the questions involve calculus and its applications — subject matter that is assumed to be common to the backgrounds of almost all mathematics majors.

About 25% of the questions in the test are in elementary algebra, linear algebra, abstract algebra and number theory.

The remaining questions deal with other areas of mathematics currently studied by undergraduates in many institutions.

Content areas

Calculus: 50%
Algebra: 25%
Additional Topics: 25%

Physics

Physics: 70 questions (2 hours)

Overview

  •  The test consists of approximately 70 5-choice questions based on such materials as diagrams, graphs, experimental data and descriptions of physical situations.
  • The aim of the test is to determine the extent of the examinees’ grasp of fundamental principles and their ability to apply these principles in the solution of problems.
  • Most test questions can be answered on the basis of a mastery of the first 3 years of undergraduate physics.
  • The International System (SI) of Units is used predominantly in the test. A table of information representing various physical constants and a few conversion factors among SI units is presented in the test book.
  • The approximate percentages of the test on the major content topics have been set by the committee of examiners, with input from a nationwide survey of undergraduate physics curricula. The percentages reflect the committee’s determination of the relative emphasis placed on each topic in a typical undergraduate program. These percentages are given below along with the major subtopics included in each content category. In each category, the subtopics are listed roughly in order of decreasing importance for inclusion in the test.
  • Nearly all the questions in the test will relate to material in this listing; however, there may be occasional questions on other topics not explicitly listed here.
  • The Physics Test yields three percent correct subscores in addition to the total score: (1) Classical Mechanics, (2) Electromagnetism, and (3) Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics. The questions on which subscores are based are distributed throughout the test; they are not set aside and labeled separately, although several questions from a single content area may appear consecutively.

Content areas

  • Classical Mechanics: 20%
  •  Electromagnetism: 18%
  •  Optics and Wave Phenomena: 8%
  •  Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics: 10%
  • Quantum Mechanics: 13%
  • Atomic Physics: 10%
  • Special Relativity: 6%
  • Laboratory Methods: 6%
  • Specialized Topics: 9%

Those taking the test should be familiar with certain mathematical methods and their applications in physics. Such mathematical methods include single and multivariate calculus, coordinate systems (rectangular, cylindrical and spherical), vector algebra and vector differential operators, Fourier series, partial differential equations, boundary value problems, matrices and determinants, and functions of complex variables. These methods may appear in the test in the context of various content categories as well as occasional questions concerning only mathematics in the specialized topics category above.

Psychology

Psychology: 144 questions (2 hours)

Overview

  • The test consists of approximately 144 multiple-choice questions. Each question in the test has five options from which the test taker is to select the one option that is the correct or best answer to the question.
  • Some of the stimulus materials, such as a description of an experiment or a graph, may serve as the basis for several questions.
  • The questions in the Psychology Test are drawn from the core of knowledge most commonly encountered in courses offered at the undergraduate level within the broadly defined field of psychology.
  • A question may require recalling factual information, analyzing relationships, applying principles, drawing conclusions from data and/or evaluating a research design.
  • The test adheres to the terminology, criteria and classifications referred to in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR).
  • The test yields six percent correct subscores in addition to the total score: (1) Biological, (2) Cognitive, (3) Social, (4) Developmental, (5) Clinical, and (6) Measurement/Methodology/Other.

Content areas

  • Biological (30 questions)
  • Cognitive (29 questions)
  • Social (19 questions)
  • Developmental (18 questions)
  • Clinical (23 questions)
  • Measurement/Methodology/Other (25 questions)
