Why Do I Need The IELTS Test?
The IELTS test is a unique English Language proficiency test, designed to assess the language ability of test takers who need to study, work or live in countries where English is the major language of communication. Many academic institutions, employers and immigration authorities require you to have a certain IELTS score before your application is accepted.
IELTS Test Modules
The commonly tested IELTS modules are;
1. Academic – For those who want to study abroad.
2. General Training – For those who want to migrate or work abroad. Whichever module you are taking, all test takers should be prepared to be tested on the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing sections.
The simple chart below shows the similarities and differences in the Academic and General Training IELTS test modules.
IELTS for UKVI
IELTS for UKVI is the Secure English Language Test (SELT) for visa applications to the UK for those who want to work, live or study in the UK.
IELTS for UKVI Different Modules
There are four (4) different modules in this test, they are;
1. IELTS for UKVI (Academic) – For those who want to study at degree level or seek professional registration in the UK.
2. IELTS for UKVI (General Training) – For those who want to study or train below degree level. Also applied to those who want to migrate to the UK under certain visa categories.
3. IELTS for UKVI (Life Skills A1) – This test is for those who need to prove their English Speaking and Listening skills as part of their application to UK Visas and Immigration for family of a settled person visas.
4. IELTS for UKVI (Life Skills B1) – This test is for those who need to prove their English Speaking and Listening skills as part of their application to UK Visas and Immigration for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.
Difference between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI
Both tests have the same test structure e.g. content, format, scoring and even difficulty level. While the IELTS test can be taken at any designated test centers in Nigeria, the IELTS for UKVI test is only taken at a UKVI approved test center and has to meet the UK Home Office administrative requirements.
Also, the Test Report Form (TRF) for both tests look slightly different since the IELTS for UKVI tests are only taken in certain approved test centers.
IELTS Test Structure
You can familiarize yourself with the IELTS test structure as follows;
Note: While the listening and speaking sections are the same for both Academic and General Training IELTS modules, the reading and writing sections are different.
Listening
Score: From 0 to 9 Band scores
Duration: 40 minutes (including 10 minutes to transfer answers)
The listening test has 4 sections and each section has 10 questions to answer. The difficulty of these sections is progressive, meaning that the first section is the easiest whereas the fourth one is the most difficult one.
Candidates listen to four recorded texts, monologues and conversations by a range of native speakers, and write their answers to a series of questions. These include questions which test the ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information, ability to understand the opinions and attitudes of speakers, ability to understand the purpose of what is said and ability to follow the development of ideas. A variety of voices and native-speaker accents is used and you will hear each section only once.
– Part 1: A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context, e.g. a conversation in an accommodation agency.
– Part 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.
– Part 3: A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
– Part 4: A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.
Score: From 0 to 9 Band scores
Duration: 60 minutes
The Reading component consists of 40 questions. A variety of question types is used in order to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.
Reading – Academic Version
The Academic version includes three long texts which range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical. The texts are authentic and are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. These have been selected for a non-specialist audience but are recognizably appropriate for anyone entering undergraduate or postgraduate courses or seeking professional registration.
Reading – General Training Version
The General Training version requires candidates to read extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks and guidelines. These are materials that are likely encountered on a daily basis in an English speaking environment.
Score: From 0 to 9 Band scores
Duration: 60 minutes
Academic Version
The Writing component of the Academic version includes two tasks. Topics are of general interest to, and suitable for anyone entering undergraduate or postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration.
– Task 1: Candidates will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and are asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in their own words.
– Task 2: Candidates will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. Responses to both tasks must be written in a formal style.
General Training Version
The Writing component of the General Training version includes two tasks which are based on topics of general interest.
– Task 1: Candidates will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.
– Task 2: Candidates will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The essay can be slightly more personal in style than the Academic Writing Task 2 essay.
Score: From 0 to 9 Band scores
Duration: 11 to 14 minutes
The Speaking component assesses the use of spoken English, and takes between 11 and 14 minutes to complete. Every test is recorded.
– Part 1: Candidates will be asked to answer general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as their home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between 4 and 5 minutes.
– Part 2: Candidates will be given a minute to prepare their thoughts on an assigned topic, before being invited to speak for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic to finish this part of the test.
– Part 3: Candidates will be asked further questions connected to the topic in Part 2. These questions will provide an opportunity to discuss more abstract issues and ideas. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
The Speaking component is delivered in such a way that does not allow candidates to rehearse set responses beforehand.

Should I take the General Training module?
It depends on your interest, the General Training tests the English language communication skills or general communication skills that are needed for those who want to live and work in English-speaking countries. Although the Reading and Writing sections of the Academic module measure the candidate’s ability to function in a higher educational institution, a range of educational institution.

Does MEC prepare test takers?
At MEC we prepare test takers by taking them through rigorous training and exposing them to several mock tests with corrections. That way the test takers feel confident to face the test on the test day.
How much does it cost for MEC to prepare me for the IELTS test?
The coaching fee at MEC is flexible in such a manner that works best for you. You have the choice to map out what time works best for you and let our team members know of it. Typically, our standard coaching fee for the IELTS is ₦50,000 for weekday classes and ₦60,000 for weekend classes. Standard coaching duration is 4 weeks.
If I can’t come to your centre, can you teach me privately?
Yes we can. We run private classes; although the prices are not fixed because many factors will first be put into consideration before doing accurate pricing.

Can I get someone to tutor me for IELTS outside Lagos?
Yes, we have trained Tutors across Nigeria capable of taking you through all the sections of the IELTS test. We can also assist you via our online platform. After your enrollment at MEC, we will schedule your classes at agreed days and times between you and your assigned tutors. We will also provide you with our free study materials/textbooks + audios for easy follow up both during and after each class. When this is in place, you will be glad you ever dealt with us.
Does the IELTS training at MEC come with FREE study materials?
Yes. We have soft copy study materials (complete textbooks in most cases) for our registered students at no extra cost. We also have other study materials for sale at our bookstore. Note that it’s not mandatory to have these materials before joining our classes, as everything you need to pass the IELTS test will still be taught during the training. Our students still have unlimited access to several study materials during their IELTS training at our centre at no additional cost.
How long does it take to get my IELTS test score?
If you have taken a paper based IELTS test, your scores will be posted online within 13 days after the test date. But if it’s a computer based IELTS test, you should expect score much earlier; between 3 to 5 days after the actual test date.
How Long Does it Take Test Score To Be Delivered To Mailing Addresses?
It may take up to 10 – 15 business days to mail the hard copy of IELTS results to individual mailing addresses.
