What Is TOEFL?

TOEFL means “Test of English as a Foreign Language”. 

Taking the TOEFL test is a very important part of your journey to studying in an English-speaking country or program. The test assesses the English Proficiency of people whose native language is not English. It tests your ability to understand North American English. Most educational institutions in the US and Canada ask applicants for their TOEFL scores. Institutions in other countries where their language of instruction is English may also require students to proof their English proficiency prior to getting admission.

Who Administers the TOEFL iBT Test?

The US-based Educational Testing Service (ETS), develops and administers the TOEFL test. ETS is responsible for setting the test questions, conducting the test and sending score reports.

Who Accepts the TOEFL iBT Test?

TOEFL is accepted by more than 13,000 universities and other institutions in over 160 countries, and preferred worldwide. It is the world’s premier English-language test for study, work and immigration.

The TOEFL iBT® test is accepted by 100% of universities in popular English-language study destinations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

About The TOEFL iBT Test

TOEFL test measures your English proficiency when studying abroad, particularly in an English speaking country. The TOEFL internet Based (iBT) test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. All four sections are taken on the same day, and the entire test is about two (2) hours long. What is most unique about the test is that it ask you to combine, or integrate more than one language skills just like you do every day.
For example, sometimes you read a passage, listen to a short lecture about a topic, and then speak or write your response. And you can take notes throughout the entire test just like you would in a real academic class.

Language heard on the TOEFL iBT is designed to sound like real-life conversations from university lectures and classes, labs, professors’ discussions with students, study groups and everyday situations. The reading passages are taken from real textbooks and course materials. This method of testing replicates real university classrooms and life proves you can communicate your ideas and confirms you are prepared to begin your academic studies.
In the following sub – heading we shall see a table that shows the range of questions and the timing for each section in the TOEFL iBT test. The time limit for each section varies according to the number of questions.

TOEFL iBT Test Structure

The TOEFL iBT test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed to succeed while studying. Let’s explore the various sections in the TOEFL iBT test and gain more insights into the test.

Reading

No of Questions: 20

Duration: 35 minutes

 

The TOEFL iBT Reading section assesses how well you can read and understand materials used in an academic environment.

It includes two reading passages, each approximately 700 words long, with 10 questions per passage. It should take about 35 minutes to complete the Reading section.

Reading passages are excerpts from university-level textbooks that would be used in introductions to a topic. The passages cover a variety of subjects. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the topic of a passage. All the information you need to answer the questions will be included in the passage. There is a glossary feature available to define words that are not commonly used, if you need it.

 The TOEFL iBT Listening section is designed to measure your ability to understand conversations and lectures in English.

It includes listening for:

  • Basic comprehension
  • Understanding the speaker’s attitude and degree of certainty
  • Connecting information

Listening question types

You’ll hear lectures and conversations in this section. Both use language you would hear on a university campus.

  • 3 lectures, 3-5 minutes each, some with classroom discussion; 6 questions per lecture
  • 2 conversations, 3 minutes each; 5 questions per conversation

You can take notes on any audio item throughout the test to help you answer questions.

Duration: 16 minutes

The TOEFL iBT Speaking section measures your ability to speak English effectively in academic settings. The four questions/tasks resemble real-life situations you might encounter both in and outside of a classroom.

 

Question 1: Independent Speaking Task — requires you to draw entirely on your own ideas, opinions and experiences when you respond.

Questions 2–4: Integrated Speaking Tasks — require you to combine your English-language skills — listening and speaking, or listening, reading and speaking — just as you would in or out of a classroom.

Prep time: You’ll get 15–30 seconds of preparation time before each response, and your response will be 45 or 60 seconds long.

Speaking response: To respond, you’ll speak into the microphone and your responses will be recorded.

The TOEFL iBT test Writing section measures your ability to write in English in an academic setting, and to present your ideas in a clear, well-organized way.

There are two writing tasks.

  • Integrated writing task (20 minutes) — read a short passage and listen to a short lecture, then write in response to what you read and listened to.
  • Writing for an Academic Discussion task (10 minutes) — state and support an opinion in an online classroom discussion.

How is the TOEFL iBT Test Scored?

The Reading and Listening sections are scored by computer. The Speaking and Writing sections are scored by a combination of AI scoring and multiple, highly trained human raters to:

  • offer a complete and accurate picture of your ability
  • minimize the rater bias that can occur with face-to-face interviews
  • ensure consistency and the highest quality

You will receive a score on each section (a score of 0-30), and a total score for the entire test (0-120).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) On TOEFL Test

What Is TOEFL?

The full meaning of TOEFL is Test of English as a Foreign Language.

TOEFL test your ability to understand and use English language proficiently especially for academic purpose.

The US-based “Educational Testing Service”(ETS), develops and administers the TOEFL®. ETS is responsible for setting questions, conducting the test and sending score reports to each examinee.

At the moment, TOEFL is accepted by over 13,000 institutions worldwide and more institutions are still subscribing

Different institutions have different TOEFL requirements. However, most US based institutions require scores not less than 79 as cut off score.

Each institution sets its own score requirements. If you are processing your admission with us at MEC, you can be rest assured that we will let you know the minimum TOEFL score required for admission. If you are processing your admission on your own, do well to contact your institution to know the score requirement.

There is no specific number of times the test is taken weekly, monthly or yearly. Meanwhile you can visit any of our office or call our team members to find out more information.

Yes, the test is given all in one day. It takes about 2 hours to complete the full test.

At the moment the registration fee is $210 USD for the exam registration. If you are paying in Naira please contact us to find out the Naira equivalent.

Before you register, decide where you want to take the test. Contact us at MEC for testing locations and available dates. You will be required to enter identification (ID) information before you can register for the test. Be sure to use the same form of ID that you will bring to the test center. Your only valid means of identification in Nigeria is your international passport.

It applies when the registration closes 7 days prior to the test date or when we can no longer register you on the official registration amount. In this case we will charge you extra fee for the registration.

If you have been registered by us to take the TOEFL test, and wants to change the test date or location, you must contact us with your intention at worst case 5 business days before your test date otherwise your test fee already paid will be forfeited.
Also if you are to reschedule your test date, we will charge you a rescheduling fee of $75 USD, and we cannot guarantee you availability of suitable date. If you decide to cancel your test within the time period indicated above (5 business days), you will receive a refund of 50% of the official TOEFL test fee. Your name and the spelling of it must match the names printed on the valid ID document you intend to present at the test center. If this information does not match, you will not be allowed to take the test, and your test fee will not be refunded.

Enter your name exactly as it appears on your international passport that you will bring to the test centre. If the names do not match, you will not be allowed to take the test and your test fee will not be refunded.
Enter your entire last name (family name/surname) and first (given) name. If you have a multiple-part first or last name, enter it as it appears on your international passport, excluding accents and apostrophes. For example, if your first/given name is “Jean Louis,” enter both names in the First/Given Name(s) box. If your last/family name is “Smith-Davis,” enter both names in the Last/Family Name(s) box. Be sure to enter all the names in the same order as they appear on your passport.

If you do not have a first or a last name, enter the name(s) you have in the Last Name field and leave the First Name field blank. This is because the Last Name field is a mandatory field, and the First Name field is not.

When you register your TOEFL iBT with us, we will create a profile/account, including a username and password. You will be able to return to your account to:

  • update your email or mailing address
  • update your ID information
  • view your registration at “View Orders”
  • add a TOEFL iBT Value Pack to your order
  • reschedule or cancel your registration
  • change your score report preference
  • view your scores
  • download a PDF test taker score report (not currently available for tests taken in China)
  • order additional score reports
  • check the status of previous orders
  • pay an outstanding balance

Once you enter your name and date of birth, you can’t change those fields. If you need to make a change to your name or date of birth, contact us for possible help. We charge between $30 to $50 USD to effect such changes depending on the nature of changes to be made.

Yes once we have registered you, a confirmation email will be sent to your email bearing your test details such as test date, start time and test centre address. You need to print out the confirmation and take it to the test venue on the test day.

Your test fee includes:
1 online score report for you, and 1 paper copy if you requested it before you took the test. Your scores will be posted electronically only, unless you request a paper copy by selecting that option when registering.
You can also download and print a PDF test taker score report for your records.
Up to 4 official score reports would be sent to the institutions or agencies you selected when registering/before your test day. ETS will send the official score reports directly to the score recipients. Keep in mind that if you designate any institution or agency to receive your scores, you will not be able to have your Writing and/or Speaking section re-scored through the Score Review service.

Yes, you can order additional score reports once your scores are available online (between 5 – 10 days after your test date). The fee is $40 USD for each report to be ordered. You can call any of our team members or visit our office for more information. Reports are mailed from ETS approximately 5 to 7 days after receipt of your request and payment. Sometimes it could be faster anyway.

You can order additional score reports as soon as your test scores are available, approximately 10 days after you take the test. You can send your scores to as many institutions or agencies as you choose for a fee of $40 USD per report/score recipient. If you are paying in Naira, please contact us to find out the Naira equivalent of $40 USD.

Score reports will be mailed 5–10 business days after MEC receive your request and payment, and have in turn contacted ETS accordingly.

Yes, you can. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period. If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another test date that is within 12 days of your existing appointment.

MEC is your sure way. Practicing your English reading, listening, speaking and writing skills as much as possible will help you feel prepared and confident on the test day. We have several resources in place to make it easier for you. You can call any of our team members or visit our office. We offer a 4 week intensive coaching in order to prepare our students adequately before sitting for the TOEFL test. We have highly experienced Tutors who understand the needs of students and are able to prepare them well enough to overcome their weaknesses. At the end of the coaching we will administer up to 2 full lengths TOEFL iBT test to students as though they are under the real TOEFL test condition.

You can purchase the recent TOEFL test preparation materials (textbooks plus CDs) at any MEC store nearest to you. After purchasing our study material we provide door post delivery services by sending materials through courier to your address. We deliver books timely (within 24 – 48 hours) to any given location in Nigeria. This service has really helped our clients who reside outside Lagos. Note that courier charges apply here and varies with respect to delivery location. Please call us to know the exact amount as per your location.

Scores will be posted online approximately 10 days after the test date. Log in to your TOEFL online account, enter the ETS ID number you received when you registered, and click “View Scores.” You can also download and print a PDF copy of your test score report. The PDF will be available within 3 days of the date your scores are posted online. Your scores are also sent to the institutions or agencies you selected at the time of registration or before your test day. Allow 7–10 days for mail delivery in the United States and 4–6 weeks for other areas outside the United States. MEC has no control over mail delivery to locations around the world. We recommend that you take the test 2 to 3 months before your earliest application or other deadlines.

Your score report includes scores for each test section, a total score and performance feedback about what test takers at your score level can typically do.

Score reports are sent electronically or mailed to score recipients approximately 13 days after the test date. However, MEC has no control over mail delivery to various locations around the world. By way of advise, allow 7–10 days after the mailing date for delivery in the United States, and 4–6 weeks or more for locations outside the United States. For information specific to your location, contact your postal service.

The standard training duration is flexible because everyone cannot learn at the same pace, however it takes about 4 weeks for an average student to complete the full curriculum and have some full length practice test taken.

No prerequisites are required. The course is designed for all students preparing for the TOEFL test.

In the course of the TOEFL training we aim at taking students through unlimited number of practice tests, although because of the pace of learning for most students we shall attempt to take up to 2 full-length practice tests with detailed corrections from our tutors before completion of the training.

Yes. We offer soft copy study materials (or complete hard copy textbooks occasionally) to our registered students at no extra cost. We also have other study materials for sale at our bookstore. Note that it’s not mandatory to have these materials before joining our classes, as everything you need to pass the TOEFL test will still be taught during the training. Our students still have unlimited access to several study materials during their TOEFL training at our center at no additional cost.

Each institution sets its own score requirements. If you are processing your admission with us at MEC, you can be rest assured that we will let you know the minimum TOEFL score required for admission. If you are processing your admission on your own, do well to contact your institution to know the score requirement.
